As part of its Sanitation Safety Plan and its Corporate Social Responsibility, Baliwag Water District (BWD) held an awareness campaign to the recipient of its Septage Treatment Plant’s (SpTP) solid end-product – sludge cake, on May 9, 2017 at Canoza residence in Guadalupe Subdivision, Brgy. San Roque, Baliwag, Bulacan.
Dubbed as “Kapihan at Talakayan: A BWD awareness campaign to the recipient of SpTP solid end-product/sludge cake”, said half-day event is aimed to develop awareness amongst recipients of sludge cake on the possible risks when being exposed to it and to teach them on the proper handling of the sludge cake to avoid risks.
Twenty one individuals, including four children, who are exposed to sludge cake used as earthfillers and soil conditioners attended the short forum wherein topics on the nature of sludge cake and the necessary precautions to take in handling and in being expose to it were emphasized by the personnel from the Sewerage and Sanitation Division and the Management Services Division of BWD led by MS. Eloisa E. Ramos. They also bared BWD’s on-going pilot study on the safe re-use of fecal sludge as soil fertilizers sponsored by the Asian Development Bank which is currently on its final stage. Participants were also encouraged to report to the nearest Barangay Health Center or to BWD any health-related disease they experience on the exposure to sludge cake.
Proper handwashing, a safety measure to avoid the risks on exposure to sludge cake, was also undertaken.
The program culminated with the distribution of safety and hygiene kits to all the participants.
