PGS partnered with BWD in staging “Batang Pinoy” Groundwater Fiesta 2017

Bannering the theme, “Preserving Groundwater makes Sense”, the Philippine Groundwater Society (PGS) partnered with Baliwag Water District (BWD) in staging the “Batang Pinoy” Groundwater Fiesta 2017 on February 18, 2017 at the Baliuag University Gymnasium, Concepcion, Baliwag, Bulacan.

Around 250 pupils, 44 moderators from various public and private elementary schools from the towns of Plaridel, Bustos, San Rafael, San Ildefonso, San Miguel and Baliwag took part to the whole day event which was also attended by Board of Directors and personnel of BWD, Plaridel WD, Bustos WD, San Rafael WD, San Ildefonso WD and San Miguel WD.

Topics that create awareness on the nature of groundwater and empowered the participants on the preservation of groundwater were discussed by experts from PGS while actual demonstration on water cycle and so as environment protection particularly the significance of tree planting were exhibited by BWD personnel.

The Local Water Utilities Administration (LWUA) brought their Buhay KYUT (Kalusugang Yaman Ugnay sa Tubig) to the event wherein they emphasized on the participants the importance of protecting water. They also held the mini-search for Little Mr. & Ms. Buhay KYUT wherein Jared Dylan Quaimbao of Waminal Achievers Academy Inc. from the municipality of San Miguel and Miamhyka Akisha De Leon of Tabang Elementary School from the municipality of Plaridel bagged the title. Health and hygiene kits were given to all the pupils while IEC materials were hand over to their moderators.

Discussions, actual demonstrations and simple games on water preservation and protection and solid waste management such as: “Litter Naught Relay”, “Garbage Pizza”, “Water Purification” and “Wiggling Water: A Groundwater Game” facilitated by BWD personnel were attended by all the participants.

In the exciting quiz show, pupils from the municipality of Bustos took the championship title while pupils from the municipality of Plaridel and municipality of San Rafael brought home the 2nd and third places respectively.

Now on its 7th year since its initial staging in year 2000, the “Batang Pinoy” Groundwater Fiesta is aimed at promoting groundwater awareness and preservation among elementary pupils all over the country. It is the first time that it was held in Baliwag, Bulacan and due to overwhelming support from the participants, General Manager Artemio F. Baylosis of BWD uttered to replicate the same event in the whole province of Bulacan with BWD at the forefront.
